(late 70's in college - early 80's working).

I was in the headhunting business in the 70s. We did a lot of temperary help for computers. Rounding up keypunch operators was a major business. The IBM 360 was just getting into wide distribution and I remember the "oldtimers" we ran into were pre-360. That is where I ran into the "wire your own boards" expression.
