China starts construction of first railway station in Lhasa:

[World News]: Beijing, Feb 9 : China will invest over 12 million US dollars to build the first-ever train station for Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, as part of the ambitious Qinghai-Tibet railway project.

The construction of the train station has commenced and the terminal will be the final stop on the Qinghai-Tibet railway, the world's highest and one of China's biggest-ever engineering-related projects.

The station, 4,000 meters above sea level, will cost over 12 million US dollars to build, state-run China Central Television reported.

Construction is expected to be finished in 2007 in time to receive the first trains from Xining in neighbouring Qinghai Province, it said.

Located across the river from the famous Potala Palace, the station is also set to become something of a local landmark in the remote Himalayan region.

The 1,142-km Qinghai-Tibet Railway from Golmud in Qinghai Province to Lhasa is the most elevated rail route in the world, reaching an altitude of up to 5,070 meters.

Work on the Qinghai-Tibet railway began in 2001. Once completed, it will be the longest on a plateau and the highest in the world, a feat once considered near impossible.

With a total investment of 3.16 billion US dollars, the railway is scheduled to be put into operation in 2007.

So far, the main body of roadbed, bridges, culverts and tunnels have been roughly completed, and related housing, electric power and telecommunications facilities have been launched, officials said. PTI
