The modern liberals and the historical dictators that you mention might have that one trend in common, but the dictators for the most part were worse even on that one trend, and obviously there methods where different.

The problem with comparing regular politicians with some of the most brutal thugs in history is that even though they might be very similar in one area if you compare them in that one area people will think you are trying to say that they are basically the same. As much as I don't like Soros, Kennedy, and Kerry, they are far from being Stalin, Mao, or Castro. To be fair to you, when you mentioned the dictators you did say "Some extreme examples would be", and you didn't call Soros, Kennedy, and Kerry "extreme examples". I understand your point but OTOH I can understand why reasonable people could get upset at the comparison.
