Canberra refuses US on China: report
February 12, 2005 - 5:29AM

The Howard government has reportedly refused to join the US in lobbying the European Union to reconsider lifting a 15-year arms embargo on China.

The US wanted Japan and Australia to join them in opposing the move, but the Howard government has refused, creating the most serious strategic disagreement between Washington and Canberra in recent years, The Weekend Australian reports.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer will not oppose the EU lifting restrictions but hopes the Europeans would not sell arms that would upset the military balance in the Pacific.

Despite promises of strict rules on such sales, the US believes France may sell high-tech military systems to China that would hamper American efforts to defend Taiwan.
