Report Questions Why Nuclear Material Went Missing

BOSTON -- Radioactive material that had been missing for four months surfaced in Boston yesterday.

According to a Nuclear Regulatory Commission report, the material was imported from Russia by Halliburton Energy Services last October.

It went through Amsterdam to JFK Airport in New York on October ninth and then disappeared until Wednesday when it turned up at the Forward Freight facilities in Boston.

The NRC report indicates the material was trucked to Massachusetts after a Boston label was inadvertently placed on the package at Forward Freight's Newark, New Jersey facility.

Massachusetts Congressman Ed Markey says the incident highlights inadequate security measures over radioactive materials.

He claims the NRC still hasn't beefed up its rules to the point where dangerous materials are kept out of the hands of terrorists. (AP)
