Hugh Hewitt - I debated The New Republic's Peter Beinart tonight before 300 center-right folks in Minneapolis. Peter is without question the very best face of the Democratic Party. Folks love him because he is earnest and very committed to Harry Truman's Democratic Party, which is a lot like being committed to the Edsel.

I have a simple question: If the Democrats were to offer a "Contract with America" today, what would be on it? Answer: Essentially reactionary ideas like raising the minimum wage and rejecting all reforms of social security. The Democratic Party has assumed the role of the United States Supreme Court,1933 through 1937 --the last obstacle to necessary innovation. It will fare as well as the Court of that era did.

But Peter should press on. Eventually his Party will exile and slam the Michael Moore nuts, not elevate them to the chairmanship. Beinart and the very small slice of the Dems he represents are the best hope for the Dems. The good news is they have no chance of influencing Dem principles. The bad news is that they have no chance of influencing Dem principles.
