A side comment - why would China want to punish NK in the first place? For sidetracking? Attracting attention? Because of 4 to 6 payloads? I dont think so...

There's big tectonic fault out there - triangulated app HK, Peijing, Tokio - and if there's a joker in the cards, that's fine, no need to have the public with their ears glued to the sea floor... I think that if anybody, then it's PRC who has some influence on this loose cannon.

Hello David, pushing China on N.Korea will do less than naught, be counter-productive, because (a) China did not create the problem, (b) does not hold the solution, and (c) is not in the line of sight.

Their umpteen thousand year training by oral history tells them to stay out, keep away, and wait, for opportunity goes to those who are patient.

They also know what I know, that the Koreans are not altogether rational, perhaps, and fearless, certainly.
