Senate Democrats demanded Thursday that President Bush order a halt to personal attacks on the party's leader, Sen. Harry Reid, and expressed regret that they had failed to mount a stronger defense for his defeated predecessor.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal carried an editorial on this matter yesterday...

Welcome to the big leagues

Harry Reid shouldn't be surprised by GOP salvo on his liberal record

Nevada's Harry Reid has long aspired to be the Democratic leader of the U.S. Senate.

Thanks in part to a Republican talent pool which saw the senator survive challenges (and some were squeakers) from figures of such national reputation as gay marriage opponent Richard Ziser and Northern Nevada rancher Demar Dahl --- though that's not to impugn Sen. Reid's work ethic and considerable back-room political talents --- he has now achieved his goal.

And how does Sen. Reid celebrate?

The senator and his surrogates say they are shocked --- shocked --- that the mean old Republican National Committee has drawn up a 13-page report, cleverly dubbed "Reid All About It," characterizing the senator's political record as one of tax-and-spend liberalism, duplicity and obstruction (except when it comes to his friends at the National Abortion Rights Alliance) --- and his lifestyle as that of a fat cat who enjoys "maid and valet service."

"Why didn't (President Bush) stand and tell the American people last Wednesday (during the State of the Union address) that one of the first items of business we were going to do in Washington is send out a hit piece on the Democratic leaders?" Sen. Reid whined in a speech on the Senate floor Monday.

Though it appears the senator was not too offended to go ahead and attend dinner at the White House Monday, as scheduled.

Particularly galling to Sen. Reid and to Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., apparently, was a reference to the way some of Sen. Reid's relatives, including lobbyist son-in-law Steve Barringer, profit from their access to the majority leader's office.

"I think the hottest ring in hell is reserved for politicians who attack their opponents' families," storms Sen. Durbin.

Surely, reiterating the cozy son-in-law relationships that merited massive coverage in the Los Angeles Times is of a slightly different order than claiming the senator's daughter can't play the piano --- or even Sen. John Kerry's gratuitous mention of the sexual orientation of Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter during the fall presidential debates.

Sen. Reid's voting record is indeed somewhat further to the left --- closer to that of Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts and Sen. Barbara Boxer of California --- than he might want to proclaim on his occasional campaign forays back to Nevada, during which he likes to don new bluejeans, sit on a hay bale and present himself as a down-home miner's son.

And Sen. Reid can hardly be surprised that Republicans chose to characterize him as an obstructionist, when he has taken up just where his predecessor, Tom Daschle, left off: vowing to use arcane Senate procedures not merely to defeat Mr. Bush's judicial nominees on a straight up-or-down vote, but rather to prevent those nominations from ever coming up for a vote.

"Is there one amongst us who can withstand this type of withering scrutiny and criticism?" Sen. Durbin asks.

Yes, Sen. Durbin. A tough old campaigner named Harry Reid can.

Welcome to the big leagues, senator.

The Party Of "He's Touching Me, Mommy!" After more than two years of Democrats saying ANYTHING they could about any of the Republicans, from Bush, Cheney, and on down the line....ANY negative and yes, sometimes foul, thing they could spit out......

This whining from the Democrats really does strike me funny. Hope they keep the whining up.....They will see if they do, there there is absolutely NO comparison to the things the Dems said about the Repubs....no comparison at all.
