I have come across a good online resource from the Cooperative Extension Service at the University of Kentucky which makes recommendations on where original and copies of important documents should be kept.

With a safety deposit box I think you should have cosigners. Then leave a note with your important papers informing them of the box and that they can open it.

If the stuff in the box doesn't require a title (for example gold coins) they will be able to sell it without it going through probate.

I think it is best to have the originals in a fireproof box for easy access. I would leave the box unlocked so any thieves can see for themselves that there are no valuables inside. I've never heard of such documents being stolen ... they have no monetary value to a thief.
