Vexatious litigants and self-absorbed individuals in general have an inflated view of their worth. Consequently, they often feel that they can get damages for their lost opportunities. Usually, this argument is rebuffed quite easily in court, usually because there is no proof of actual loss or no proximate cause that can be proven or both.

Pro bono nut jobs are even more of a threat to the system as they don't have the limitations of Rule 11 and other sanctions that lawyers face. Again, my argument for "the loser paying legal" is that it makes lawyers and clients think very carefully before using the weapon of mass destruction located at the courthouse.

If I had a dollar for every nut I've heard say, "I'll sue you. I'll get triple damages. I'll get my lost opportunity and I would have been a millionare if your client hadn't looked at me cross-eyed," I'd have at least lunch at Burger King.

Ok I exaggerated with the last conditional, but you get the point.
