Jill -

If they sold just after the crash, they had significant losses.

Before the crash, I was managing an account in which we had AAPL (among other things). Bought in '97. We just held on to it, and my ex-wife is now very happy we did. ;-) (She was pretty mad that we hadn't sold at the peak at one time, but now all is forgiven.)

Most of the other stocks in that account have regained much of their value as well. Buy and hold doesn't necessarily mean "sell at the bottom". Of course, it doesn't always mean "sell at the top" either.
