Grant realized his advantage over Lee in 1864 was numbers - and he used them. The whole campaign in the spring of 1864 is an unbelievable story. Cold Harbor was Grant's biggest mistake. The other brutal northern assults were under othes - ie Fredricksburg.

Grant did all right in maneuver warfare out west. Vicksburg is a classic when he crossed below the city, IMneverHO. Lee certainly should be tarred with the same brush of Butcher considering Malvern Hill and Pickett's charge

Grant almost lost his command because of his mass attacks in Virgina. Lee was a butcher also, although Stonewall's flank attack at Chancellorsville was a classic.

My point was that they were using Napoleon's tactics with civil war weapons. This is typical.
