As an Administrative Manager for a company that hired many college age people, I interacted with them often. Many of those were college students. When I started working with them in the mide 80's I would ask them questions. Of the hundreds I dealt with over fifteen years only three or four could discuss American History with any knowledge. One of those, one debated WW II well enough to highlight the limitations of my knowledge and memory. (She had been home schooled.) There are bright spots in the education system. My children attend one of them. PS - I admire your class and dignity demonstrated through your loss.
