The problem is that left/right, liberal/conservative and libertarian/authoritarian are usually not the same thing. I like viewing left/right as a horizontal axis, and libertarian/authoritarian on the vertical axis. So the first quadrant is right-libertarian, the 2'nd is left-libertarian, the 3'rd is left authoritarian, and the 4'th is right-authoritarian. I see commies as Q4 types. I tend to be a Q2 type.

However, there is another difference I see. Liberals tend to be libertarian on freedom of speech issues (broadly speaking) but authoritarian on economic and environmental issues. Conservatives tend to be libertarian on property rights issues and economics, while being authoritarian on freedom of speech issues and moral issues.
