with it's usual inaccuracy the CIA...and of course Condi Rice had is ALL WRONG...the entire infrastructure of the Soviets was in horrible shape....and yet Ronnie Raygun was willing....just like BUSHKEE....to put the entire nation of the US at serious economic risk for his ego in proving the 'evil empire' was his to destroy by building massive weapons systems that STILL haven't DIED....
oh...that's right....Bush jr is out to be Dr Frankenstien with the complete failure of a missile defense system when OUR SCHOOLS and INFRASTRUCTURE here at home are collapsing....

Al, I can think of a number of alternatives...none fit feeding the war from both sides. That's pretty cynical.

Like I said before, "reality" then was a lot different than "reality" now. Was the Soviet Union already on its final legs, or was Reagan directly responsible for its collapse?

During the 80s, Iran and Iraq were getting financial and military support from both the US and the Soviets. In reality, Iraq and Iran were the pawns of both super powers, or who knows, maybe the US and the SU were pawns in the hands of the Iraqis and the Iranians? Even 20/20 can't really divine that question.

In any case, what does it matter whether the Iraqi-Iranian war was a reflection of the cold war or not? The policy decisions we made back then are hurting us today with or without the cold war in place. That's the bottom line.....the rest is just icing.
