Thanks for the post on Pournelle Axes. Had never heard of them. Unfortunately, it suffers from the problem I mentioned before. Left & right are "statist" or "antistatist" on selected topics. What one really needs is three orthogonal axes I guess, then pigeonhole by octant.

Another way to look at it is liberals tend to favor personnel freedoms that are individual in nature, while seeking to control interactions with others and the environment. Conservatives tend to want to regulate intimate personnel freedoms, but embrace darwinian interactions between individuals and the rest of the biosphere.
