I do not know if the the world is warming beyond its normal range

What is the world's "normal range"? The climate now, the climate 1000 years ago, or the climate 12,000 years ago during the last Ice Age? Does it even make sense to talk about "normal ranges"?

That is exactly the key:

if it is a problem, and plan to deal with it if it comes primarily through adaption rather than taking heroic steps to prevent it.

Listened to a talk Crichton gave on one of the cable channels yesterday, and that is exactly his point of view. Preventative strategies favor the elites. Adaptive strategies favor individuals.

While I always thought of myself as slightly more skeptical than you on the "human caused global warming is happening and will be a serious problem if nothing is done about it" idea, it now seems that if I am it is only at the margin. I totally agree with your statement -

"I do not know if the the world is warming beyond its normal range. Given the uncertainty of our predictions and given the uncertainty of our knowledge of how to prevent and the cost of preventing, my position is that we should keep studying it, do some sensible things to mitigate the aggravation of the problem, if it is a problem, and plan to deal with it if it comes primarily through adaption rather than taking heroic steps to prevent it."
