"You're right, 'legislating morality' is an oft-used phrase. When I use the term, more than not, I refer to attempts to legislate an unwinnable drug war, unstoppable prostitution, assumed sexual preference and forced religious symbolism, etc.--all categories of which have been mightily GOPwinger espoused."

Unstoppable prostitution: Stopping conduct that is characteristic and prevalent throughout history and pervasive in all cultures no matter how restrictive, via legislative efforts is an unrealistic goal. The question, therefore, is not whether to stop prostitution via legislation (an impossibility) but whether legislation on legal limits and regulation of prostitution is advisable.

We will never stop murder, violent crimes of all sorts, thievery and numerous other things that are crimes against individuals and a harmful insult to society either for that matter. However, it is advisable that we legislate laws to deal with this type of inevitability,

Unwinnable drug war: This is very much like the prostitution issue. We well never be totally successful in controlling substances and so the question becomes, what if any legislation is advisable regarding the risks of harm to our citizenry and society as a whole.

I don’t know what you are referring to by legislating an ’assumed sexual preference’ or ‘forced religious symbolism'.

’ etc.--all categories of which have been mightily GOPwinger espoused.

Everyone has a view point and an opinion about these categories, even ‘etc.’ If you could define what you see as the particular problems associated with the GOPwingers, that would help us to move this discussion forward.
