Amy, I've noticed that organic foods are rising well ahead of the CPI inflation rate. I pass this off to the incredible rise in demand for them as well as the inability to scale up significantly to respond to the demand. Some of the fastest growing companies I look at at these days are "whole" foods (organic) and health foods companies. This is what makes me think that it is more due to supply/demand rather than monetary inflation.

Every super market I go in now has extensive organic foods kiosks when in past years you had to search for the one section or go to a speciality store. I can choose from about five different farms within ten miles of my house where I can purchase range fed and organically fed chickens and beef. I used to get one of the organic farmers I buy from to do tractor work for me but now he's too busy expanding his operation, several upscale restaurants advertize his chickens on the menu (which have tripled in price since I started buying from him).

We're a good five years behind the Left coast in these matters. It has taken a while for the organic movement to make it into mainstream food retailing here, but now it is here with a vengeance.
