EDIT:

<<<installment of "cooking for the cheep">>>

That shows that buying many thirds of DROOPY is detrimental to financial health. -VBG-

Sounds delicious, but does it come with a box of stents? <G>

The only situation I know where eating out approaches the economy of eating in is to get two Taco Bell spicy chicken soft tacos for 99 cents each and drink water unless you qualify for a free Pepsi. Also, certain boiled-crawfish joints in Louisiana are a pretty good deal.

Strangely enough, Manhattan is a good place to eat out cheap and well if you pick the right diners, the places where the locals from a few blocks around eat. The hotels are an entirely different story.

The range, variety, and excellence of American restaurant food is an immense advance over what could be found in most cities only 25 years ago. But as anyone with good sense knows, you can eat at home for less than 25% of what you spend eating out. Of course that includes washing the dishes.

I think that Andrew Tobias takes up some of these things in his book about buying stocks. Lots of good advice about how to scrape together the initial capital for investing.
