looks like even yuppies are not easy nowadays<g>. Wholefood Market sales were down, and stock was down a lot too. There is one near where I live, and the parking lot has few cars most of the time.

RE: "Even in the Bay Area it isn't that easy to find restaurants with organic food so you might be comparing apples and oranges."

This is true.

RE: " Clearly organic grocery stores have raised prices significantly"

No kidding. Bad luck too organic stocks are down. You know what that means - more price increases ahead and they'll try to dump this burden on the small volume shoppers, such as myself. They've resorted to eliminating some of the smaller portions already to a certain degree, ironically I actually buy less now. (If I wanted to subsidize a family of ten, I'd shop at Walmart or Coscto.) The organic deli food is way too spicy for people that are even Asian - it's as if they have a an MBA guy (that's never been to Asia nor eaten Asian food) making up the deli menu for Asians and he decides that making it really hot and spicy is what Asians want. Wrong. And they actually make chicken soup so spicy it would kill your child, rather than cure them of a cold. I mean, why make chicken soup any other way than the American way - it's an American dish for goodness sakes. Cayenne pepper in chicken soup ??? The deli cooks think "pepper" means Cayenne pepper and they think "green pepper" is Jalapeno pepper - just because the cooks are Mexican doesn't mean their entire target market is. And what is it with all that garlic? - do you want potatoes with your garlic... No wonder their stocks are down. They've missed their market. There needs to be more competitors in the organic business, to increase the choices. They totally neglect people with American taste.

Amy J
