I never claimed this -- I was responding to a post. I never mentioned VOIP.

The old local-loop subsidy is plain BS. The telecom biz was a government protected franchise from the start and costs are undoubtedly higher as a result. I'm no idiot with respect to the costs. I worked 5 years as a regulator.

Government royally screwed it up -- the costs would be a lot lower had we not had the system in the first place and appeals to "natural monopoly" as a justification for the government protected franchise.

My whole pt is still valid. For telecom -- the natural monopoly argument regarded technology as static and that there would be inordinate waste allowing competition and duplication. Total BS -- instead government interference stymied competition and the march of technology.

Water and sewer may be different, but I am not sure I even buy the natural monopoly argument as relates to electric service having worked in this field.
