My guess is bookkeeping entries.

That's my guess too. Also just a guess, but I seem to remember Claude implying something to that effect. If that's the case, the bullion banks that are short that gold will be hurting if the POG rises. Also, the people who have purchased the ETF's may not own what they think they own. And the demand that appears to be there from people purchasing the ETF's may not translate to a demand for physical gold.
