I think that is the key point where we differ. I know a number of couples in committed long term relationships, and believe me, they are exactly like marriages. So, I really don't see any redefinition of marriage; rather, society finally catching up with reality.

Since the denied rights extend past simply taxes, and into real human grief and trauma (the example of the second parent losing custody of the biological child of a late partner is a real occurance), they should be protected by the Constitution. If that means some consider it a 'redefinition of marriage', they should realize that the redefinition has already occurred. Time for everyone to catch up to that reality.

However, I agree that we need to do something better about healthcare. I don't know if that means, on the one extreme, a socialistic health care system (ugh), or laws that require employers to provide more extensive health care, or what. I wish the Bush administration would make THAT their next priority, rather than SS or gay marriage.
