Yes a route surviving is not automatically a good thing any more than all the industries built on horse driven transport surviving to modern times on government subsidies would have been a good thing.

Mineta said it best today, it would be cheaper for Amtrak to buy airline tickets for their passengers on the dead routes they continue to sink money into....

Another brilliant post........the rest of the world recognizes the benefits of a good train system; Bush doesn't. In America, the red voters don't like them so we are scrapping them. This place is becoming more and more like a communist, third world country. Each year, we go backwards by two.
