Most of the Democratic opposition to it was along the lines of wanting a bill that was more generous (and thus more expensive) than what Bush was pushing. The opposition, came from both sides. This bill was defeated and passed only with bribes, obsfuscation of fact, threats to those who knew the facts and wanted to disclose them and mis-accounting of the expense. After the reps passed a bill that today (heaven only knows what we'll learn tomorrow) is estimated to cost nearly 2X what bush said it would, to say that a democratic bill would cost more is, well frankly stupid and irritating.
