I think mercury is only a fresh water problem thanks to big mining business. I can't imagine the problems with health that will be emerging (if not already) in SE Asia & Latin America and wherever else the US gladly moves it's manufacturing in order to avoid pollution control costs. I heard on NPR about Texaco I think it was dumping into the Amazon which caused many problems with school children downstream, yet in their annual report it was lauded because of the significant reduction in disposal costs for this plant.
