Taro Posted on Wed, Feb. 16, 2005 The most awful OUR OPINION: FIDEL CASTRO BELONGS ON LIST OF WORLD'S WORST DICTATORS Parade magazine, which The Herald carries as an insert on Sunday, does a commendable job of selecting the World's 10 Worst Dictators each year. This year's picks once again constitute a formidable lineup of tyrants, thieves and killers. No. 1 on the list was Omar al-Bashir of Sudan, most responsible for the humanitarian crisis that has taken tens of thousands of innocent lives in the Darfur region, and then Kim Jong Il of North Korea, who starves his people even as he builds a nuclear arsenal. They are truly evil We do not agree, however, with the absence of Cuba's Fidel Castro from the list. This year, he was moved to the category of ''dishonorable mention.'' Sorry. That's not enough. We can only speculate that the editors were tired of including this incorrigible despot in the latest rogues' gallery. As the longest-surviving dictator in the world, he should have a reserved spot on the list. Every year he remains in power adds to the level of misery and repression that the Cuban people must endure. Other dicators -- Mao, Idi Amin, Saddam Hussein -- come and go, but Castro remains. As the magazine noted, Castro and one other were dropped from last year's list of the Top Ten Tyrants ''even though their actions were as harsh as the year before.'' In Castro's case, this is undeniably true. Most of the political dissidents Castro threw into Cuba's crowded jails in 2003 remain there, and the few who were released remain on conditional status. There can be only one good reason for Castro not to be on this list -- that he's no longer around to oppress his people. It will mean that Cuba is free
