Actually considerable UI prograss has been made. I just upgraded Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 (Workstation) to the brand new version 4 last night, in fact. (I use it as a Samba file server because it's so much faster than Windows.) Some things had gotten impressively easier. With each release they put usable GUI front-ends on more and more crufty old Unix arcana.

Some things, on the other hand, WEREN'T any better.

So there's been plenty of improvement. It's just that they started in such a deep hole, they'll never catch up.

I was going to switch to Solaris x86 this go-round, but Charles dissuaded me by saying the RAID s/w didn't work and the TCP/IP was slow :-).
