ild, it is because of privacy issues. Especially once they can associate an email address or user with an IP address.

In most cases and I suspect this is true of SI as well, message boards capture the IP address of each poster.

Once the combinations of email/user/IP address is known and through white page lookup or other means can be associated with a name and potentially income, it might become tempting for certain groups to attempt an attack on your computer to determine if other user information can be obtained. I leave the rest to your imagination.

However, it is difficult to prevent this unless you use an anonymizer (if you trust them). A dynamic IP helps somewhat but not much.
