The more Greenspan loses control the more cryptic his words.

Mishedlo, RE: " Greenspan said he did not know if the bond market would view the [internal IOU] as new debt or just replacing an implicit debt with an explicit debt"

I actually liked Greenspans comments a lot. It's the first time to see anyone finally talking about how privatization makes the current implicit debt (which is an internal IOU) into an explicit debt. Would like to see and read more on this.

RE: ""How the markets interpret it is really the important issue," and could move interest rates higher or lower depending on their reaction to any new plan"

Okay, this part is bad. He's suppose to tell us how he thinks the markets are going to interpret it - can't he just ask WS before making huge changes?

RE: " the demographics are inexorable, and call for action before the leading edge of baby boomer retirement becomes evident in 2008," Greenspan said...The current pay-as-you-go system was only viable because of favorable demographic trends (when).. ratio of worker for retirees was quite high"

This part is an excellent commentary - Congress puts its head in the sand over the demographic shift towards fewer workers to retires.
