foo,

I stand corrected. Just minutes after posting that message my State Farm agent called me back. I was told that State Farm is very interested in writing new homeowners and they have actually grown their business over the past year. I asked what had changed from our last discussion (the famous, you are paying for Texas black mold, even if you live in Michigan discussion). The agent told me that for one quarter last year State Farm stopped writing new policies and sent agents out to inspect every property they had. Then they dumped any house that didn't meet their requirements and started writing new policies. It appears that many insurance companies did the same thing and that State Farm picked up a lot of business as their rates did not increase as much as the competition's did. I do not know if that is true, or just some fluffy sales bs.

Of course you must have this protection. About 7 years ago I was cutting shrubs and this little girl on a bike made a choice to ride in the street to avoid my work area. Please note, I was not blocking the sidewalk in any way. She rode about 50 feet or so past my house and the promptly fell off her bike and chipped her tooth. An hour latter her dad was screaming at me and somehow thought I was responsible. Clearly I was not, and as he never filed any lawsuit, someone must have told him the same. Still, had she fallen on my property, I would have been in for some pain.

The good news? My agent told me to grin and bear the 18.2% increase, as it was one of the lowest increases in the industry and within the State Farm cost structure. And, expect my car insurance to go DOWN this year. Probably just more bs.
