Bell Labs pioneered Unix,and the C and C++ languages, but was unable to benefit financially from these major computing innovations. They gave these developments gratis.

And of course Bell developed the transistor, silicon technology and the laser and gave them away at nominal costs. Too often, scientists left Bell to commercialize their inventions.

I do not think that the AT&T breakup was for the best. Most of the reduction in long distance rates is greatly due to the changes in technology and less due to the greater amount of competition.
