I was talking about Russia and her satellites before the wall fell.......nations that were called communistic but, in reality, were just run of the mill dictatorships. Which also provide a perfect example of my point. They poured the rouble equivilent of trillions of dollars over the years into all sorts of subsidies and government projects that lost money hand over fist. As for military spending, their spending dwarfed ours as a percentage of GDP (and thus strained their economy more) at the time, and now our spending (against measured by % of GDP) is lower that it was during the cold war.
