The Atlanta-based company is eliminating redundant positions created by its acquisition last year of AT&T Wireless Services Inc. In November, Cingular said it would cut about 10 percent of its work force during 2005, and while officials didn't say exactly where the cuts would be made, many of the up to 7,000 layoffs were expected to occur at former AT&T Wireless facilities. The former AT&T Wireless headquarters in Redmond will remain open as Cingular's Northwest headquarters, however. The recent notice sent to the state calls for permanent layoffs taking effect April 15 at locations in Bothell, Redmond and Seattle. The state requires companies taking part in mass layoffs or plant closures to give the affected employees 60 days advance notice. In the first round of local layoffs Cingular on Jan. 6 warned 155 local employees that their last day would be March 7. Another 88 workers have until March 18.
