I have a nasty suspicion that increased bizarreness of these conspiracy theories is a side effect of the political doublespeak that has severed the American public from reality.

In a place where the population is so disconnected from reality as to believe Saddam was responsible for 9/11, it is not surprising, really that other wild theories emerge and find fervent support.

When you take away the necessity of concrete proof so that people will believe whatever you say, as the Bush administration has done imho, you should not be surprised when they start believing those planes were an illusion and WTC collapsed as the result of a government conspiracy.

My humble theory, of course...
