The policy was a public relations nightmare and only gave more credence to terrorists. On Palestine TV, the images constantly on the screen were Israeli tanks crushing houses. My Arabic reading skills are quite low. I read on a primary level, although my spoken Arabic is more advanced. At CPAC, MEMRI had a booth staffed by two persons with a flat screen TV showing clips of al-Arabiyya and Palestine TV (at least the segments I watched) and the English translation in subtitles at the bottom. MEMRI is taking up a needed and appreciative task by spreading the word about the messages of hate that travel through the medium of broadcast and “independent” outlets that echo throughout the Arab world. Vividly, I remember watching Palestine TV after Arafat’s death and seeing the ongoing Quranic dictations and imageries of his “greatness.” MEMRI is a great resource in deciphering the Arab media. However, MEMRI seems to fall short. Briefly, I spoke to representatives of MEMRI at the booth setup at CPAC. While they were knowledgeable, neither spoke Arabic and could only confirm that the primary translators of Arabic news stations were Israeli researchers. There is no doubt that messages of hate spread through the Arab media. But, to have most sources of translation as those who work in an Israeli office takes away from the efficacy of the message. The office needs to revamp its credentials by working with not only Israelis, but Arabs who will lend credence to their research. This will only boost and legitimize the message that MEMRI sends across many media mediums. terrorismunveiled.com
