Gee, this is very well written--by a smoker, I would guess. I never lost all the myriad ways of adult naughtiness when I quit, and I didn't notice a loss of general spiritedness in others I love who stopped, either. They don't cough and hack and stink to high heaven like they used to, though.

I was in the neighborhood bar the other night for the first time, and was just overwhelmed by drunk people smoking. One woman burned my shirt with her cigarette, accidentally. It is possible to glamorize smoking, and I loved particularly all the accessories like an embossed Mexican leather cigarette pack holder and a really flashy sterling silver lighter. And leaning in and having someone you were flirting with light you up was fun. But none of it is as fun and peaceful as having plenty of fresh air in your lungs and not having to worry about a smoking-related cancer or heart disease diagnosis at your next doctor's visit.

My Irish sister-in-law was a dedicated smoker all her adult life until a couple of years ago. In her late forties, she had totally wrecked her vascular system because of her smoking, and had to have the arteries to her legs rewired surgically so blood could flow properly. She is prone to blood clots now and will never, ever be able to fly back to Ireland to see her family because of that risk. Her health is permanently compromised. She doesn't smoke now--I bet she wishes she never did. I doubt that she would find that article glamorous or true.

But I did enjoy the writing!
