From that experience, I didn't get the sense that there was anything brutal or crazy about the government Chinese government has been incredibly crazy and brutal when Mao was in charge (until mid-70's), and has headed in the free economy but one party system since then, so the economy is liberalizing while governance remains authoritarian. It will be interesting how it plays out over the next couple of decades, it's not as easy to manage middle class entrepreneurs as it is a bunch of peasant serfs.
