Seriously, I think the people that write these reports are humble people (although they do have a lot to be humble about <g>). The problem is they expect people who read this stuff to understand the limits of thier study:

The survey includes information on the recipient's degree, career outcome, and a range of personal characteristics. By analyzing this data, it was possible to "test hypotheses about whether being married or having children affects the careers of women and men differently.

The problem is that most people who read it, do not understand it and then there are those that probably do not read these studies at all - as is likely the case of Lawrence Summers - but who seem to be drawing conclusions from it, nonetheless.

Suggestions as to the possibilities of ever going from being able to do statistical analysis on such restricted basis to researching physical and genetic relationships is beyond belief. How did Lawrence Summers ever get a job at Harvard, much less being its president?
