This is the same situation we got into in Vietnam. The political and military leaders were ALL aware there was no way we could "win", but they continued to feed Americans to the lost cause until the helicopters airlifted the lucky tail-enders off our embassy roof. In Vietnam, it took about 14,000 more American deaths before our stubborn political leadership gave it up, after realizing they couldn't "win". All the threatened "consequences" that would follow our leaving failed to occur. Nothing much happened, except the Vietnamese were allowed to live in comparative peace, and our soldiers weren't dying trying to impose a government on them that they obviously didn't want.
