I was starting to feel like Miss Havisham here, wandering in my tattered, faded thong around the old cobwebbed cabin, noting the moldy durian birthday cake on the table, and tapping out Happy Birthday in a minor key on the out-of-tune piano.

But I went looking for the funeral and my gosh we were prolific in '98, and funny, and all over the map in subject matter. Amidst the funereal posts (the wake was apparently in Italy at my expense, and included a lot of wine and fresh meat) was a discussion of Patty Hearst, and national mythologies, and whether professors should teach neutrally, or from their own bias-- a topic that certainly brings to mind Ward Churchill today.

I have gotten nothing done; it's after noon, and I;m still in my nightgown. I am worse than Miss Havisham who at least got dressed.
