In essence, should we know better?" Peter Cheeke, PhD Contemporary Issues in Animal Agriculture, 2004 textbook I think that there are lots of different ways to reach people, Rambi, regarding the horror that humans create by eating meat. I think some people are very intellectual and respond to quotes by other intellectuals. Or by finding out that people they admire are or were vegetarians (historical figures). The research showing that pigs may be as smart or smarter than chimps might get some people reconsidering their diet. I think some people stop or slow down on eating meat when they read studies showing the health risks of meat. Some people might stop eating meat when they realize mad cow is here and the government is doing almost nothing about it, or that animal food is full of animal feces and growth hormones and fear. I think some people build a big disconnect between themselves and the animals they eat and compartmentalize, and for those people just disconnecting the disconnect is helpful. Some people may respond when they find out they are eating animals with distinct personalities who are as intelligent and sensitive as their dogs (or cats). Most of all, I just don't think people are aware of the facts of factory farming. That is what shocked me and made me reevaluate my own eating habits. I don't think most people would want animals to suffer like that. But the meat industry goes to great lengths to make sure no one ever finds out. I think children naturally feel close to animals and that none of them would ever begin eating meat if they knew anything about the way animals are treated or killed. I think the taste would make them sick if they knew. For most adults, meat is a habit that is hard to give up. I think it is really fascinating that we are now faced with an avian flu epidemic that could kill almost everyone that is caused by a virus mutating and jumping species, originating in groups of people who live with their livestock. Life is cheap! This must be karma! I like you even if you eat pigs, though. I am not really into judging people for what they eat. I think everyone is on some journey or search for knowledge, and it took me most of my pretty long life to get where I am now, which isn't very far, really. Why would I expect more of anyone else? That doesn't seem fair.
