I just don't get how you can be late on a certain card and get penalized by a completely different company

It can only happen if your credit rating is checked for some reason...even then it is the creditor to decide...your rating with them matters as well! So it is not all doom and gloom....

<<<I just don't get how you can be late on a certain card and get penalized by a completely different company.>>>

Your credit granters periodically check your credit history. If they see your credit being deteriorated they usually have all rights to jack up interest rates.

<<<if you had a ford and chevy car payment >>>

Most car payments are fixed, so the banks can't jack them up.
