People make as good of pay in mom and pop shops (where they survive) as walmart

Not my experience, though haven't been around retail for many years. Still, I have a friend or two that worked for independents within the past decade or two. Small retailers have been at the bottom of the pay scale for many, many moons.

I suspect you're generally correct about the small shop owners. Some do well, absent better competition.

Nonetheless, the big boxers expand economic opportunity. Lower prices give their customers more "stuff", while creating more jobs. Hell, hereabouts I'd expect the WM payroll is equal to or greater than the total (retail payroll) that existed prior to their arrival.

The main advantage WMT has is the direct pipeline to the Chinese manufacturers. Never forget that. They probably buy almost directly. This must be stopped. This is what's killing US Manufacturers. The small guys don't have that pipeline to China. Their pipelines are here in the USA. They deal with Americans, and their suppliers probably also deal with Americans.
