I think your statement below is right on:

There's the heart of the matter IMO. The credit card companies started it, but they don't like what they have created. I don't know anyone that hasn't been inundated with "great offers". I avoided them all, but I do have compassion for those that did not, and little sympathy for the companies that started this mess.
