I think your statement below is right on: "If anything, credit card companies have been wildly loose in extending credit to everyone, sound credit history or not." There's the heart of the matter IMO. The credit card companies started it, but they don't like what they have created. I don't know anyone that hasn't been inundated with "great offers". I avoided them all, but I do have compassion for those that did not, and little sympathy for the companies that started this mess.
