We owed the Iraqi people for abandoning them in their struggle for freedom. We are repaying the debt.

Ooohh..we have a new one. We have the real reason junior invaded iraq. Of course...to abate herbert walker's remorse for baiting the shites (and kurds as best i recall) to rebellion, only to abandon them (politics you know) to the wrath of the ruthless dictator...the rebelling iraqis of course safe in the knowledge that the most powerful man on earth, with a mighty army poised at the borders, would not let them down. And so now junior is relieving the old man's suffering.

What a good son, devoted to a father (he once challenged to a fist fight) and armed with justification #1 of securing the safety of Americans (remember those ubiquitous WMDs...where are those WMDs anyway?, democracy and freedom being #2 and neither #1 nor #2 being the true reasons, as we now learn), dispachting his mighty knights (army, navy, marines, poles and hungarians) and quickly defeating the ruthless dictator thus avenging the father's legacy.

What a noble story of Camelot and Arthur and Lancelot and flying dragons...

Al

Perhaps you will share your worldly wisdom on how oppressed people get to freedom.

?? Dude, history is full of examples of where an oppressed people rose up against their authoritarian government and installed democracy, or at least some other form of self government.

US in 1776, South Korea in 1980s, Philippines in 1980s, Indonesia about 6 years ago, Spain in 1970s, Portugal in 1970s, Greece about 20 years ago, South Africa in 1980s, the list goes on.

There are also plenty of examples where an oppressed people rise up and the victors install some other non-democratic form of government.

Iran in 1979, Cuba in 1959, China in 1940s, Vietnam from 1947 to 1980, Cambodia in 1975 (ouch!).

But examples where an outside power came into an "oppressed people" which were not at war with the outside power and forced democracy on them?

Hmmmmm. I think we have a first in Iraq.
