As one person told me this weekend, "If the president of Harvard University cannot even engage the marketplace of ideas without placing his job in jeopardy, how are students supposed to feel if they ask provocative questions?"

The president of Harvard anecdotally suggested that women were not as good in science and math as men because of innate differences. In fact, in recent years, that perception has been challenged by several in depth studies. But even if it hadn't, where does the President of Harvard get off making such suggestion when the scientific facts are not clear? In fact, the president of H. has been insulting and annoying the staff and faculty for over three years. This brouhaha is the latest in a long list.

Having said that, the process at Harvard is a democratic one:

The Associated Press

BOSTON Feb 22, 2005 — Harvard faculty described a meeting Tuesday with university President Lawrence Summers as collegial a session with sharp questions, but without a move toward a no-confidence vote.

The meeting with Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences was closed to the public and media. Professors said afterward they hoped it would mark the beginning of better relations and Summers agreed.

"I thought it was a very candid and thoughtful discussion, and I hope it will help all of us move forward together in the most collegial ways possible," he said in an e-mailed statement."

And what do you think of the treatment that Ward Churchill of U of Colorado has gotten since his observations re. 9/11 have become well known? Some of which I might add are similar to ones by Pat Buchanan.
