What do you think we are doing with defense? Defense isn't an "inefficient and loss making investment" it isn't an investment at all. And the burden of the spending has always been much lower than it was for the Soviets. Why do you think we have run such high deficits since WW II? Mostly from increased social spending. SS is not the problem; defense is. Social Security is the number one program and will pull away from defense even further while itself being passed by Medicare. he only thing that is different between us and the Soviets is that we are less corrupt and more efficient. That's far from the only difference and in any case it is a huge one. Tim
