They were corrupt. The soviet oligarchy got rich off the back of its workers. They where and they did, but that wasn't their biggest problem. The basic system was wrong in severe ways. The corruption made it even worse but if the corruption was at more normal levels (or even non-existant) there still would have been severe problems. Corruption, and high defense spending levels were both strain on a basically cancerous system. Together they pushed it over the edge, but without them you still would have had the cancer. Tim
